A Long Way Gone

During the 1990s, Sierra Leone's brutal civil war took a heavy toll on its citizens, including its boy soldiers. Read one account in Ishmael Beah's A Long Way Gone.

Copies of the book in print and audio formats are available in the library.

The group will meet to discuss this heart wrenching story on Thursday, February 9th in Room 122.

A Long Way Gone, by Ishmael Beah is a fantastic book to read. The bloody scene's made it hard to put down the book. As he kills a Sierra Leone rebel, Ishmael says, "A splash of blood hit my face. In my reverie I had opened my mouth a bit, so I tasted some of the blood" (118). This scene is very sensory detailed and this makes the war seem very real. Ishmael is in the war not only fighting for his country, but also for his life. In history class we learned about The French Revolution War and how there was relentless fighting that lasted years. Many people lost their lives fighting for their country, land and freedom.
