Banned Books?!
September 24-30, 2017, is National Banned Books Week, where libraries across the country raise awareness about titles that have been banned, or challenged, in U.S. schools and community libraries.
What are banned books? According to the American Library Association (ALA): "A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials."
In an effort to raise censorship awareness, the WMCC Fortier Library is highlighting titles which have been under attack. Visit our display to find out what books were "inappropriate" or "offensive," and why. Is your favorite book on the list from the Library of Congress's Banned Books that Shaped America?
