In the 1930s, Louise Dickinson Rich and her family moved to the Rangeley, Maine area, which she chronicled in her book We Took to the Woods.

Returning scholar Suzanne Brown will bring the historic details of their adventures and hardships to life on Wednesday, February 29 at 7 p.m. at the WMCC Fortier Library.

Copies of the book are available at both the Berlin Public Library and WMCC Library.

A Long Way Gone

During the 1990s, Sierra Leone's brutal civil war took a heavy toll on its citizens, including its boy soldiers. Read one account in Ishmael Beah's A Long Way Gone.

Beyond Brown Paper: Industrial Explorers

An opening reception for “Industrial Explorers,” an exhibit on Research and Development at Brown Company from 1915-1968 will be held on Wednesday, October 26^th at the White Mountains Community College Library from 4 to 6 P.M. The exhibit is on loan from Plymouth State University’s Museum of the White Mountains. It is made up of photographs from the University’s Beyond Brown Paper collection and explores the origins and history of the innovative Brown Company Research and Development Group. Linda Upham-Bornstein researched and wrote the accompanying text.

The exhibit will be on display at the White Mountains Community College Library until January 9, 2012.

It's alive!

In the spirit of the season, the WMCC lunchtime book discussion group is bringing to life the Gothic classic, Frankenstein, Or The Modern Prometheus by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley.

In the almost 200 years since its original publication in 1818, this well-known story has been reworked and transformed for the theater, film, television, and many a Halloween costume. Written as a cautionary tale about the ethics of science, and also against man's inhumanity to man, the themes in Frankenstein, still apply in the modern world.

One Hundred Years of Solitude

Starting off the White Mountains Community College/Berlin Public Library's 2011 fall lecture/discussion series on Wednesday, August 24, at 7 p.m., is One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel García Márquez.

Originally written in 1967, this highly acclaimed story, first written in Spanish and translated into 37 languages, tells the story of seven generations through turbulent times.

For 20 years, American-born author Bill Bryson traveled the world, and wrote funny stories about it until he settled in England.

Back in the United States, he wrote a weekly British newspaper column with his humorous observations about the changes that have taken place since he lived here last. Those articles have been assembled into the book I'm a Stranger Here Myself.

Join us on Thursday, May 12 around noontime in the library.

The Northern Forest Center's National Endowment for the Humanities-funded Ways of the Woods exhibit will be open to the college community and the public at White Mountains Community College until April.

To accompany the exhibit, WMCC's Fortier Library and Berlin Public Library will host a Northern Forest series with three book discussions and one talk, thanks to funding from the New Hampshire Humanities Council.

Band of Brothers

In 1942, E Company was created as an elite rifle company for the U.S. Army. The group of citizen soldiers, 140 men, and their seven officers, saw action throughout WWII, and were present at Normandy and also at Hitler's Eagle's Nest. Stephen E. Ambrose's Band of Brothers tells the stories behind the historical facts, of the men and their battles.

We will be discussing Band of Brothers at the College's lunchtime book discussion group on Thursday, February 3rd around noon. We have copies of the book to lend in print and on audio. Bring your lunch!

The Godwulf Manuscript

What's new?

Thanks to the Student Senate, we now have three shiny new computers with Windows 7. They've got Microsoft Office 2007, Open Office 3.2, dvd/cd readers/burners, as well as some specialty software, and are very fast! Look for the lilac desktop images for these new additions.

Our Friday hours have expanded! We are opening at 7 a.m. on Fridays now (and are still staying open until 7 p.m).

On Friday, May 14, White Mountains Community College was proud to host noted wildlife biologist Ben Kilham as our 2010 commencement keynote speaker.

Mr. Kilham has worked with wild NH black bears for 14 years and has overcome a major learning disability to become a man of many talents, including gunsmithing, maple syrup production, and wildlife rehabilitation.

Meet the author!

In The Darkness Under the Water, author Beth Kanell explores a little known side of 1920s American history: the eugenics project that took place in Vermont. The book is a fictionalized account of life just over the NH border, in Waterford, Vermont, focusing on those of Abenaki and French Canadian heritage, and gives us a glimpse of what life was like during the construction of Moore Dam.

On Tuesday, January 5, at noon, the author will be on campus to answer questions and discuss the book.

Copies of the book are available for loan in the library.

Introducing ProQuest

The WMCC library is pleased to announce a new addition to our databases family: ProQuest.

ProQuest is a research database with over 8,000 titles in full text. You can search by entering a key word(s), by topic, or by publication. Resulting hits can be narrowed down by scholarly journals, dissertations, books, newspapers, trade publications, and magazines as well as by clicking on suggested subject headings.

Listed with our other research tools, a link to ProQuest may be found on the Library's homepage, using the Databases link. The username and password necessary to access it remotely are available from the library staff.

New Laptops in the Library

Thanks to the WMCC Student Senate, the library now has 2 new Dell Latitude E5400 laptops!

These two laptops are wireless, and print to the HP LaserJet P4014 printer (outside the library office), have Office 2007 and Open Office 3.1, CD/DVD burners, and even have SD card slots. They will be available to WMCC students to use in the library only, and will have to be checked out, the same way reserve materials are. They'll be available on a first-come, first served basis.

When all other library computers are busy, ask a member of the library staff if you can check out a laptop!

Three Cups of Tea

For the September meeting, the lunchtime book discussion group will be talking about Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortenson & David Oliver Relin.

"In Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time, Greg Mortenson, and journalist David Oliver Relin, recount the journey that led Mortenson from a failed 1993 attempt to climb Pakistan's K2, the world's second highest mountain, to successfully establish schools in some of the most remote regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan." Fall Lecture Series

This fall, the WMCC Fortier Library is once again teaming up with the Berlin Public Library and the NH Humanities Council to host an evening lecture series open to the community. Each of the three events are on Wednesdays and begin at 7 p.m. and will be held in the WMCC Fortier Library. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.

The first is on September 16th, Edie Clark will present a lecture titled "Baked Beans and Fried Clams"

On October 7th, Cheryl Savageau will present "American Quilt Traditions"

And on October 28th, Rebecca Rule will present "That Reminds Me of a Story"

New Electronic Databases

The WMCC Fortier Library is pleased to announce the addition of two new electronic databases: Credo Reference and StatRef.

With over 400 reference books in electronic format in its collection, ranging from culinary to history to biology (and everything in between), Credo Ref should be your first stop for every research assignment.

StatRef is a great database for nursing students, or anyone with a medical question, and comes in three parts: Anatomy TV, RN Database, and STAT!Ref Database. STAT!Ref and RN have the full text of medical and nursing books in electronic format.

From the library homepage, Credo Reference and STAT!Ref can be accessed electronically using the links at the Databases menu; contact the library staff for usernames and passwords to access both from off-campus. Usernames and passwords are not required on campus in Berlin and Littleton.

New Computers

Thanks to the WMCC Student Senate, the library now has five new Dell desktop computers with flat screen monitors. Also, two new wireless Dell laptops can be used in the library by our students.

Bellows Falls

Photographer and historian, Peter Randall, will be visiting the WMCC Library to discuss his photo exhibit New Hampshire, Then & Now, a collection of photographs taken long ago contrasted with photos of the same general locations shot a few years ago by Randall. Phantom of the Opera

A Wicked good time

Frank Baum's classic The Wizard of Oz has been given an extreme makeover in a prequel of sorts, that revolves around the life of the Wicked Witch of the West (whose name is Elphaba, by the way). What was life like in the land of Oz before Dorothy, Toto, and the house which landed on the Wicked Witch of the East? Gregory Maguire offers his version of the tale in Wicked: The Life and times of the Wicked Witch of the West.

Then & Now photo exhibit

New Hampshire, Then & Now: Historical and Contemporary Photographs of the Granite State from 1840 to 2005

New Hampshire Historical Society...

Photographer and author Peter E. Randall created the exhibit, which contains 80 photographs of New Hampshire; 40 from as early as the 1800s, and 40 taken in either the same location or a similar situation, in the 2000s. Click here to go to Mr. Randall's web page.

The exhibit will be in the library until the first week of May.

New printer!

Thanks to the White Mountains Community College Student Senate for a generous donation that allowed the Library to buy a new HP LaserJet 4015 printer, and toner.

The new printer can print 52 pages per minute, and do double-sided printing, too. The paper tray can hold over a ream of paper, so you'll be less likely to run out of paper while waiting for that English assignment to finish printing. No more long lines for the printer (hopefully!).

Other printers in the library will be shuffled around, but in a good way. The new printer and the HP color printer will now sit outside the library office. Study Rooms 1 and 2 will have their own printers, while the small computer lab will have two higher capacity Dell printers.

Printing is free for White Mountains Community College students, and $.10 per page for all other library users. Color copies are $.25 per page for community members.

Stop by and check out the new equipment! Ask for help with double sided printing.

The Art of Racing in the Rain

In 1843, Charles Dickens introduced merry olde England to Jacob Marley, Tiny Tim, and Ebenezer Scrooge. Since then, the story has been reproduced in print, stage productions, TV specials, and feature films. We all know the tale, but have you ever read the original story?

Our monthly lunchtime discussion group will meet and share opinions of the original A Christmas Carol on Thursday, December 18th at noon. The library has several print and audio versions of Dickens' classic, for your reading or listening pleasure. Stop by and pick up a copy. Everyone is welcome--and bring your lunch!

Eat food, not too much, mostly plants

Ever wonder what it means when you read a label in a grocery store and see the words "food product"?

Do you feel guilty about eating that slice of yummy chocolate cake?

Are you struggling with your health and wondering if your diet could be part of the problem?

In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto by Michael Pollan is the next WMCC lunchtime book discussion title. In it, Pollan tries to explain, from a journalist's point of view, what has happened to the food industry and why the American diet is making so many of us unwell.

We'll be meeting in the library on Thursday, October 23rd, around 12:15 (bring your lunch). Copies are still available in the library, both in print and cd formats.

Not sure where to find information for that paper that's due all too soon? Stop in the library -- or email us or give us a call --and ask a member of the library staff for help. You'll be amazed at the information you'll find.

If you'd like to do research from home, stop by the library to pick up an info sheet that has addresses, logins, and passwords for some great resources. If you're taking classes at one of the academic centers, ask the staff there for a copy of the password list. Your instructor gives you an assignment ... you need to do research ... where do you start?

There have been some changes to the database's appearance, but it's still an amazing resource for finding articles. When you click on EBSCOhost, from the Databases link on our Library's webpage, you'll find a new "Googlized" appearance. Don't worry, it only looks different. It's easier than ever to narrow down your search from 50,000 hits to 50. You'll find it easier to find images now too. And, in case you were wondering, the login and password are still the same, so you can still do your research at 1 a.m. from home.
